Training Progamme on ‘Human Rights Towards Reduced Inequalities’

Women Development Cell of Mahatma Education Society’s Pillai College of Education and Research, Chembur organized a National Human Rights Commission, New Delhi sponsored One Day Training Progamme on ‘Human Rights Towards Reduced Inequalities’.

SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities on 20th February, 2020.

The main objectives of the training program was to promote an understanding of universality of human rights among student teachers.

The Training program was divided into 4 sessions which included

  • Introduction to Human Rights
  • Human Rights Institutions in India
  • Rights of Women and Children
  • Rights of Other Vulnerable Groups

The training program was presided by Chief Guest Prof. Dr. Subhash Avate, IPS (retd) Former Additional DGP, Mumbai, Maharashtra, Principal, Dr. Reni Francis, Pillai College of Education and Research, Chembur along with other dignitaries.

Dr. Subhash Avate in his key note address gave insights into the Human rights and discussed the role of various national and international bodies protecting and safeguarding human rights. Followed by Mr. Maiful Hussain Former Secretary, MSHRC who discussed about Constitutional Provisions regarding Human Rights. Dr. Chandrasekhar A. Chakradeo, Assistant Professor, Chembur Sarvankash Shikshan Shastra Mahavidyalaya, focussed on Rights of Women and Children and Dr. Shamim Modi, Chairperson & Assistant Professor – Centre for Law and Society, School of Law, Rights and Constitutional Governance, TISS (Mumbai) laid emphasis on Rights of Other Vulnerable Groups. Each session was very fruitful as resource persons could meet the participant’s expectations. The programme ended with vote of thanks and certificate distribution. Ms. Vani Achari was the convener of the training programme.

Women’s Day Celebration on 9th March, 2020

Women’s Day is celebrated on the 8th of March every year around the world. It marks the evolution of the ethos that ‘An equal world is an enabled world’. On this special day, eminent Chief Guests, Adv. Neeta Kedia, who specializes in marital laws and laws that safeguard interest of women, along with her daughter Dr. Shruti Kedia, graced the occasion and shared inspiring and valuable thoughts on the different ways women should continue to empower themselves.

The students of F.Y.B.Ed. demonstrated the essence of this important day beautifully through a thought-provoking role-play, which made the audience ponder over the silent and effortless contributions of women in our lives starting from that of our mothers to our wives, sisters, daughters and friends. The YouTube video of the heart-touching poetry written by our respected Principal, Dr. Reni Francis called ‘Daag Achhe Hain’ was played along with a strong and insightful speech delivered by one of the students. To add to the occasion, the books published by teachers, Dr. Mary Verghese, Dr. Swasti Dhar and Dr. Sunita Jain were also released by our chief guests with great joy and pride.

The special assembly concluded with the vote of thanks and our Principal, Dr. Reni Francis’s views on this eminent day. The students, teachers and guests enjoyed the assembly immensely and were inspired with the encouraging thoughts that illustrated how our individual actions, conversations, behaviors and mindsets have an impact on our larger society.

The WDC of MES’s Pillai College of Education and Research, Chembur in it’s initiative towards Health and Hygiene distributed Sanitary Napkins to the support staff of the institution.


International Yoga Day

International Yoga day was celebrated on 11th July, 2019 at MES’s Pillai College of Education and Research, Chembur. The theme was ‘Listen to your Body’

Professional Yoga trainers Mr. Sadashiv Kashinath Kunde and Mr. Farheed who are highly trained and have done their philosophy in Yoga conducted the session. Our Principal welcomed them with a bouquet and spoke about the importance of yoga in our lives and how often we neglect to Listen to our body at times. Mr. Sadashiv gave an introduction of how one must work on the health issues faced by a teacher, by doing sedentary work. Mr. Farheed started the session with basic meditation followed by explaining how to overcome the problems of besity, migraine, tensions, insufficient sleep, concentration & fear. Many student-teacher asked their doubts too. He further asked us to perform some stretching exercises which were very helpful. He further stated that at times there is no need to join the gym, as stretching exercises keeps obesity away and makes one active. He also laid emphasis on the right way of breathing. He concluded the session by saying a beautiful prayer & conducting a several exercise. Lastly he conducted the laughing exercise which was like a cherry on the cake. This was indeed a knowledgeable session. They asked us to remember “Healthy Body & Mind helps us to achieve success and our goals in life. Our Principal and other staff members thanked them for coming & sharing their valuable inputs & time with us.

Nation-Wide Competition for University Students on Laws Related to Women

Mahatma Education Society’s Pillai College of Education and Research, Chembur under the Women Development Cell organized a Nation-Wide Competition for University Students on Laws Related to Women sponsored by ‘National Commission for Women’, New Delhi held on 22nd December, 2018.

Workshop on Laws Related to Women

Mahatma Education Society’s Pillai College of Education and Research, Chembur organized a ‘Workshop on Laws Related to Women’ sponsored by ‘National Commission for Women’, New Delhi held on 21st December, 2018.

The Objectives of this Workshop under the sponsorship of ‘National Commission for Women’, New Delhi were

  • To create awareness about the laws related to women among student teachers.
  • To promote an understanding of the various laws related to women.
  • To disseminate knowledge of laws related to women in society.
  • To promote respect and observance of the constitutional obligations and gain knowledge of laws related to women.
  • To appreciate the laws related to women and empowering those who are denied their rights.

The topics covered in this workshop were as follows:

  • Constitution of India mainly, the Preamble, Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles of State Policy, Fundamental Duties, including Article 32 and Article 226 thereof National Commission for Women Act, 1990 (20 of 1990)
  • Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961.
  • Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005.
  • The Sexual Harassment o Women at workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal Act) 2013.
  • The Maternity Benefit Act 1961.
  • The Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act 1971.
  • The Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, 1956.
  • The Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994. etc.

The session was fruitful as Mr. Chandrasekhar A. Chakradeo, Assistant Professor, Chembur Sarvankash Shikshanshashtra Mahavidyalaya, Chembur, the resource person for the workshop could meet the participant’s expectations with his expertise. The session was interactive, with sharing of experiences and knowledge of laws related to women. The workshop proved to be a great success with participants requesting to hold more such workshops in near future. The day ended on a positive note with report reading of the whole day’s proceedings and vote of thanks followed by National Anthem. Certificate of Participation were distributed to the participants at the end of the session.

International Woman’s Day

WDC celebrates International Woman’s Day. Students made posters and displayed them through a gallery walk on the theme of ‘Women Role Models’ and performed a fashion show on the same.

Aids Awareness Workshop

Women Development of Cell of Pillai College of Education and Research organized AIDS Awareness Workshop on 4th December, 2017, in the lecture hall, Room No. 404. The main objective of the workshop was to create awareness about AIDS among the pre-service teachers so that they can spread the awareness among the students in future.

The resource person for the workshop was Dr. Shankar Chawla, LCEH, MD in Homoepathy, P.G. Course in Classical Homoeopathy from International Academy of Classical Homoepathy – Greece, Post-Graduate in Preventive Health Care from Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad and has been practising homeopathy from last 32 years.

Pre-service teachers were oriented about the symptoms of AIDS and what preventive measures need to be taken. He clarified the myths and misconceptions of this dreadful disease.
